How Close Can We Get to the Ideal of Simple Transfer in Multi-lingual Machine Translation (MT)?

چکیده

A bstract The ideal o f simple transfer aims at restricting transfer rules to the exchange of unstructured lexical entities— the terminal leaves in the tree structure that is output from monolingual analysis. All information that is not lexicalised in the source language is represented as features to be transferred unchanged to the target language. In E U RO TRA this ideal is approached through a centrally coordinated research within various phe nomena which are supposed to be of translational relevance, i.e. having lan guage specific surface manifestations. The outcome of this research ideally is to agree on a uniform treatment o f these phenomena across languages, thus leading to simple treinsfer. The paper makes a non-exhaustive overview over problems solved, problems under investigation, known but outstanding problems, and on this basis introduces a discussion of what will remain as unsolvable prob lems within an essentially sentence-based MT-system.

On the Translation Quality of Google Translate: With a Concentration on Adjectives

Translation, whose first traces date back at least to 3000 BC (Newmark, 1988), has always been considered time-consuming and labor-consuming. In view of this, experts have made numerous efforts to develop some mechanical systems which can reduce part of this time and labor. The advancement of computers in the second half of the twentieth century paved the ground for the invention of machine tra...

A Trainable Transfer-based Machine Translation Approach for Languages with Limited Resources

We describe a Machine Translation (MT) approach that is specifically designed to enable rapid development of MT for languages with limited amounts of online resources. Our approach assumes the availability of a small number of bi-lingual speakers of the two languages, but these need not be linguistic experts. The bi-lingual speakers create a comparatively small corpus of word aligned phrases an...

Automated Corpus Analysis and the Acquisition of Large, Multi-Lingual Knowledge Bases for MT

Although knowledge-based MT systems have the potential to achieve high translation accuracy, each successful application system requires a large amount of hand-coded knowledge (lexicons, grammars, mapping rules, etc.). Systems like KBMT-89 and its descendants have demonstrated how knowledge-based translation can produce good results in technical domains with tractable domain semantics. Neverthe...

Thermodynamic and Heat Transfer Evaluation of Pocket Drying Section in the Multi-Cylinder Dryers of Paper Machine

In this study a developed model has been used to evaluate the paper drying process and examine the pocket dryer conditions of a multi-cylinder fluting paper machine. The model has been developed based on the mass and energy balance relationships in which the heat of sorption and its variations with paper temperature and humidity changes have been taken into account. The applied model can be use...
